The foundations of CBNS research are the four theme areas, which capture the ultimate application end points of the research:
- Delivery systems: examine, understand and quantify the nanoscale interactions between delivery systems and the cells, tissues and organs of the body that define patterns of drug activity and toxicity.
- Vaccines: improve the protective efficacy of vaccines and at the same time reduce unwanted “off-target” side effects by studying how nanoengineered structures interact with immune cells.
- Imaging technologies: identify and develop 'intelligent' imaging agents for MRI, PET, X-ray CT and ultrasound that can be controlled, respond to biochemical signals and facilitate early detection.
- Sensors and diagnostics: develop technologies for biomarker detection and methods for the isolation and measurement of single cells.
